Experiential Learning : Another thought

Written by Bayo Adekola

Again I went through a refresher Training of Trainers (TOT) course and the whole topic of experiential learning was discussed. It brought up some questions for me as an individual and it surrounds the issue of where we all start learning from in different contexts. To break it down, at what stage of the experiential cycle is a  college student, recent graduate with little experience or working professional. I don't what to dabble into the learning styles which has confused many but is also a true reflection of who you are and how you think.

College students
I think that college students learn a lot of theories and analysis of what exists. The colleges teach the theoretical background required for application. In my opinion, I feel that students are at the stage of abstract conceptualisation then move to active experimentation through concrete experience and reflective observation.

Recent graduate with no experience
At this stage, the focus is no more on theory but the individual is seeking out to experiment with the underlying theories he or she has learnt in the real world. This person starts from active experimentation to concrete experience to reflective and then he or she can conclude on the validity of the existing theories or creation of a new one through abstract conceptualisation (analysis).

Experienced professionals
They do have concrete experiences and whether many actually reflect is another topic for another day. This is followed by abstract conceptualisation which either validates the existing experiences compared with the existing theory. Sometimes it leads to the creation of a new one. The existing theory is tried out in another context or the new theory is tested.

What is the impact of the points above on learning?
Learning Point 1: For students, always start with the theory and proper analysis.
Learning Point 2: For recent graduates, provide a safe space for active experimentation.
Learning Point 3: For experienced professionals, build on their previous experiences.
Learning Point 4: We all have to go through the experiential cycle to learn no matter where we start from.
