Driving Learning in Flat Structures with Hierarchical Mindset
Written by Adebayo Adekola
What kind of organizational
structure facilitates learning? Let's focus on the traditional hierarchy and flat
structures. So many people think that learning is easier with flat
organizational structures and many studies have validated this line of thought. The funny fact is that many
seemingly flat structures are all flat "on paper" and maybe
"design" but mindset is still hierarchical. How
does one drive learning in such systems?
Here are few tips to drive learning
in this context:
1. Identify the situation. Do not shy
away from the fact that it exists.
2. The CEO should be the first advocate
of this change.
3. Focus on driving learning not the
mindset only. Most times we focus on changing the mindset and leave out the
main objective which is to drive learning.
4. A cordial relationship can minimize
the hierarchy mindset. Have fun together in the office and outside.
5. The common sign of a hierarchical
structure is the fear of communicating without prior approval especially at
meetings. One can change the mindset by allowing free speech without fear
of reproval. Communication is learning and learning is communication.
6. Consider innovative approaches
of changing the mindsets to one that drives learning
- Access to relevant tools, templates and resources
- Mentorship can be helpful to break the hierarchical mindset
- Lunch hour round table discussions can provide a relaxed environment
- Mix up your training participants if culture and situation allow for such.
- Learning should not be the responsibility of the manager. It should be driven by the employee with support form the manager.
- We can also change the use of certain words from boss to team lead; manage to support; department to team etc
- Dressing down, flexible work days and having common culture can bring about a change in hierarchical mindset.
